If you’re choosing between these two cruise lines, a similar-looking itinerary can hide a very different vacation. The useful question is how you want to spend your time, both on the ship and ashore.

Icon of the Seas from Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean

A starting point for families, mixed-age groups, and travelers who want a choice of activities. Your fare includes accommodation, selected dining, entertainment, and a range of onboard activities. Features vary by ship.

Look closely at which attractions are on the ship you’re considering. A feature you saw in a video may belong to a different vessel.

Scarlet Lady from Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages

An adults-only setting for couples, friends, and solo travelers. Included dining, Wi-Fi, group fitness classes, and entertainment are part of the line’s offering.

If a grown-up atmosphere is high on your list, that distinction may help you narrow the choice before comparing itineraries.

Compare the total, not just the fare

Make a short list of what you expect to use. Then ask for the cost of the same kind of vacation on each sailing.

  • Start with a cabin category you would actually book.
  • Check dining, drinks, Wi-Fi, and gratuity terms for the exact fare.
  • Add any shore excursions and specialty experiences you want.
  • Include travel to the departure port, transfers, and any hotel nights.
  • Compare deposits, cancellation terms, and change conditions.

A package you won’t use doesn’t add much value. A lower fare that needs several extras may not stay the lower total.

Look beyond the cruise line

Write down your three priorities before looking at ships. They might be family activities, a balcony, and convenient flights. Or they might be longer port days, good dining, and an adults-only setting. Use that list to rule options in or out.

Then check the route carefully. How many days are at sea? How long is each port stop? Are you comfortable with the departure and return times? A ship you love still needs an itinerary that suits your trip.

A quick way to decide

Traveling with children? Begin with a family-friendly sailing. Want an adults-only environment? Put Virgin on the shortlist. Still undecided? Compare specific sailings for your dates rather than trying to choose a whole brand in the abstract.
